Skateboarding and other urban sports are often overlooked when it comes to the athletic aspect, disregarding the athletes as punks or troublemakers. Often portrayed with this assumption in media, aren’t helping the sports to properly grow either. Skateboarding has been around a while now and is a part of the Olympic program in Tokyo 2021. BMX freestyle is also debuting in the Tokyo Olympics, making it the first Olympic ever to include urban sports. How will this inclusion affect the mainstream outlook on these urban sports? And will this inclusion give mainstream respect to other urban sports as well?
