Thousands of Austinites attended a rally at the Austin Capitol on Saturday to protest Senate Bill 8, otherwise known as the Heartbeat Bill, which bans abortions after six weeks, or after a fetal heartbeat is detected. Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed the bill on May 19, and the law will take effect on September 1, 2021. Senate Bill 8 also allows anyone anywhere in the country to sue a Texan who obtains, provides, or aids an abortion. The abortion ban is just one of a raft of conservative bills that have recently passed in the Texas legislature, including a bill that allows Texans to carry a handgun without a permit.
